Abba, make my heart your home.

A conversation between Jesus and I…

Me: “Holy Spirit Come. Lord, what do I need to do to make my heart ready for you? To become a place where you will dwell?”

Jesus: “Just open the door. I will come and prepare the snacks, I will clear off my favorite chair, I will open the blinds and let the light in. I will make your heart a home, a place where I love to dwell. You need do nothing but to linger with me while I redecorate. Let me do the work in your heart. I will remove the things that are distasteful to me, just be willing to let go. Pride needs to go, I want humility here. I’m taking down the mirrors, there’s too many. I want you to look at my face. Insecurity needs to be pulled up from the floor. I will replace it with flooring that is rooted in who I say you are. You are beautiful, my darling.

Let me scrub and wash you clean. There is dust. There are stains.

The dust has settled because of inactivity. There are things I put in your home long ago that are ready to be put to use. Hospitality and prayer are to be ignited once again. Relationships that have been broken, I want to mend. There are a few holes in the wall, deep wounds, allow me to fill them and cover them with a fresh coat of paint.

Engage your heart in what I want to do to make this place a home. Will you let me in here?”

Me: “Yes, please come!! Help me to trust you.”

Jesus: “Let me turn the TV off, there’s constant noise here. You’re distracted. I want to meet with you in the quiet of the morning as the sun rises.

I’m not going to power wash the inside of your home. I will wash it with a rag and soapy water. It will still take elbow grease, but you will not be damaged. I will deal with you tenderly, but I will also scrub as hard as you allow me. I want to make you clean.

You have given me the living room, but I want the whole house. The hallway to the kitchen is blocked, you’re not getting the nutrients you need. Let’s take down the wall you built, brick by brick.”

Me: “Okay, do whatever you want to, my heart is yours.”

Jesus: “Let me have the whole house now. I’m turning the lights on, it’s gonna be bright. You can open the blinds. There is no need to fear letting the light in, there’s no need to fear what people may see or think. I’ve created you to grow in vulnerability and honesty.”

Me: “Okay, Lord. I am giving you the keys. This home is yours now. Please take the lead. Have your way, make your home in me. Give me grace for the refining. Bring out your beauty in me. Thank you for pursuing me.”

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.
